When you are communicating with anyone you would need to remove all distractions so that you are able to concentrate on what is being said. The various types of distractions that stop you from being a better listener include replying to emails, talking on the phone, listening to music. If you are in a room with a television make sure it is turned off.

You need to pay full attention to what is being said and if you are unable to understand, ask for clarifications. Asking questions proves that you were attentive during the conversation.
It is always advisable to wait for the other to finish talking before you start your conversation. You should try not to interrupt anyone while they are talking. You will not just prove to be a bad listener when you interrupt people midway during a conversation but come across as someone who lacks the basic etiquettes of communication. Basically it is just plain rude to interrupt someone.
Do not assume what the other person is saying. When you start assuming things you will on occasions simply get it wrong.
Listening is an important aspect of communication and you will need to pay attention to this important skill, if you want to have a successful realationship.
